According to an independent market research
DVR popularity is surging in the US
Household. Dish Network by offering
Satellite TV
with free
DVRs may be contributing to
this surge if not completely definitely by a major
portion.
DVRs are very convenient for
watching programs on demand. Skipping Commercials, pause
live TV are a few attractions.
Nearly half of U.S. households are expected to own
digital video recorders in five years, as cable and
satellite companies heavily market the devices to
consumers, a research firm said Thursday. The installed
base of
DVRs
is expected to increase to 55 million by
2010 from 7 million in 2004, Jupiter Research said. That
will amount to 47 percent of all U.S. households by the
end of the decade. "Cable multiple system operators (MSOs)
appreciate the
DVR
as a key customer acquisition tool
and revenue driver while the two satellite operators see
ever-more-robust DVRs as their answer to
video-on-demand," Jupiter Research analyst Todd Chanko
said in a statement. "Both groups have stepped up their
DVR marketing to increase consumer awareness." The
installed base of high-definition TV monitors is also
expected to increase dramatically over the next five
years. By 2010, 74 million households are projected to
have
HDTVs from 13 million last year. At the same time,
the number of households with
HDTV service is expected
to increase to 69 million in 2010 from less than 4
million last year. "Television networks and pay-TV
operators alike are unsure of consumer demand for
HDTV," Chanko said. "Behind closed doors the executives are
still measuring the real costs to produce and distribute
HDTV
against the benefits. That's why there are only 26
hours of
HDTV
programming a day across seven broadcast
networks - and almost half of those hours are supplied
by PBS (Public Broadcasting Service)."
